Zeenat Aman in conversation with Sanjoy K Roy

Zeenat Aman, probably Hindi cinema’s first 'Indo-Western' star, burst upon the horizon in the 70s and made celluloid history by destroying stereotypes of what a typical Hindi movie leading lady was supposed to be – the sari-clad “eternally self-sacrificing” heroine gave way to a new glamorous woman of the world who straddled sex appeal, raw passion and acting prowess. Zeenat was like India’s Jackie Kennedy – a fashion icon with a suave sophisticated charm. She was chic and dazzling as the girl with the guitar in Yaadon Ki Baaraat  who sang the immortal Churaliya hai tumne jo dil ko (inAsha Bhosle's voice), a song which still plays across nightclubs in India in remixed and retro versions. By the end of 1970s, Zeenat was at the pinnacle of popularity having been the cover girl on every noted Bollywood magazine. In 1978, she starred in Raj Kapoor's massively publicised Satyam Shivam Sundaram; she won both critical acclaim and a Filmfare nomination for the film.
